We’re very fortunate, in our industry, to have passionate professionals with the drive and commitment to change things for the better. Sonja Bella is one such person. Not satisfied with traditional Trainer education surrounding Weight Management, Sonja developed a course to broaden the scope for all Trainers. This course is now a Nationally Recognised Training program.
Thank you Sonja, for this guest post…
Why a Certificate IV in Weight Management?
Through my own personal journey, I discovered the damage that poor diet information can do to a person’s health. As a teenager, I lived off 1000 calories a day for nearly 10 years because of dieting advice from media, magazines and social pressure which caused me to be diagnosed with borderline osteoporosis at the age of 32!
This experience made me passionate about helping others to get off the dieting merry-go-round, one that ultimately leads to obesity and health complications for so many.
After more than a decade of practicing as a health and fitness professional, at both a national and international level, I realised that today’s approach to weight loss and weight management all too often has a bias towards each industry or profession.
Most professionals only specialise within one area of the problem; broadly speaking – nutrition, exercise or the psychological factors that contribute to weight gain – leaving clients to try and join the dots.
My vision centers around changing the face of weight management to bring a more holistic approach to weight loss and weight management. Specifically, to encourage higher levels of networking and increased use of referrals so that we can better support the needs of clients as a united front.
According to statistics, in August 2013 over 14 million Australians were considered overweight or obese with Australia being ranked as one of the fattest nations in the developed world.
For years, health professionals have been encouraging Australians to adopt a healthier lifestyle but, with obesity rates more than doubling in the last 20 years. Clearly, the message has not been heard.
It’s this thinking that led to the development of the Certificate IV in Weight Management.
This is an opportunity to enhance Personal Training careers.
